Interesting Kiwanis Facts• Kiwanis Motto: “We Build.” • Size: 300,000 members in 94 countries • Emphasis: Eliminating iodine-deficiency disorders (the leading cause of preventable mental retardation); meeting needs of children in pediatric trauma, safety, child care, early development, infant health, nutrition; teaching parenting skills. • Origins: Kiwanis was initially founded for the exchange of business between members, but by 1919, its emphasis had changed to community service. • Women’s membership was approved in 1987. • Kiwanis sponsors Circle K Clubs for college students, and Key Clubs for high school students. • Membership: “Prospective members are invited to join by existing members. The club’s board of directors then reviews membership information for approval.” |
